Digital Tomorrow - Fifth episode

The fifth episode of Digital Tomorrow addresses the theme of Industry 4.0 with Mr. Marco Sacco, Principal Investigator at CNR, head of the Lecco branch of  STIIMA,the Institute for Systems and Intelligent Industrial Technologies for Advanced Manufacturing.

What is Industry 4.0? The term 'Industry 4.0' comes about because we are in the midst of the fourth Industrial Revolution, following the first two in the 18th and 19th centuries and the third in the 20th century, which saw the introduction of automation (robotics) into society. The fourth Industrial Revolution has integrated technologies and people: in Industry 4.0, there are no classic factories with people doing repetitive jobs with machines; conversely, machines and people actually cooperate for greater efficiency and quality, with the consequent reduction in time and costs.

For SMEs, Industry 4.0 brings several advantages: there is greater efficiency in projects and consequently in product quality, the process can be monitored and this translates into speed of implementation at reduced costs and time. This increases the competitive advantage for those who equip themselves with these technologies that already exist and are available to everyone, such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things and virtual reality.
